Coimbatore: B Ramkumar, a 18-year old college student was a resident at Suppathal Layout, Rathinapuri in Coimbatore.
On the fateful evening of October 8 at about 4.30 pm, Ramkumar met with an accident near Ganapathy More Market. He was immediately rushed to Coimbatore Government Hospital for first aid and then shifted to KMCH on Avinashi Road for specialized treatment.
In spite of intensive medical care, Ramkumar did not respond and was declared brain dead on October 10. The shocked grieving family which included his father Balasubramani and mother B Supriya came forward to generously donate their son Ramkumar's organs.
On October 11, the Multi Organ Transplant Surgeons and their team harvested Ramkumar's heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, eyes, skin and bones. His liver and one kidney were transplanted for a patient at KMCH, the other kidney, eyes, skin and bones were transported to a private hospital in Coimbatore, while the heart and lungs were sent to a private hospital in Chennai. The family members were reportedly glad that their son's organs gave a new lease of life to nine needy patients.
Honouring their gesture, Dr. Arun N Palaniswami, Executive Director, KMCH thanked the family for their bold and timely decision on donating their son's organs. He added that this act of generosity even in times of grief will inspire awareness among the public to support the nobel cause of organ donation.
