World Bank allocates Rs.18 crores for repair of Nilgiris' Kundah Dam; Delay due to tender process

The Nilgiris: The clog in the massive canal of the Kundah Dam in Nilgiris disrupts power generation and is a frequent occurrence in the region.

Hence, an appeal was made to remove 60 percent of the debris present in the canal of the dam at an estimated cost of Rs.18 crores to the World Bank and to accelerate the tender process for the same.

The Kundah Dam which is 89 feet high generates a power of 455 MW on a daily basis to the funnel power stations in Ketti, Barli and Pillur. For these reasons the Kundah Dam is considered the main dam. But over the past years, the dam had not been cleaned. Since the cleaning process was not entirely undertaken at the dam, the canal in the dam gets clogged during the rains, causing mayhem and disruption in power generation.

At present, the Kundah Dam has over 60 percent debris and can reach its full capacity even with light rains. The Electricity Board carried out the process of dissolving the slurry in the pipes using water, two days ago. Only if the temporary maintenance work is carried out for over a week, the clog can be entirely removed. However, the waste removal work was completed overnight and the power generation resumed.

Though the World Bank has allocated Rs.18 crores for the removal of waste from the Kundah Dam, the process has been stalled due to the delay in the tender release. Thus, it has been urged that issues in the tender work be sorted out and cleaning work commence as soon as possible.
