Coimbatore: In a swift move, activists and public in the area saved nine trees from being axed for the purpose of laying high tension power cable towers in Seerapalayam, near Madukkarai here.

According to K Syed from Osai, he had received information from local residents in the area about nine trees which were to be axed to give way to the ongoing power cable tower project and these were among the many trees that were to be axed for the project. When Syed and other residents arrived at the spot and protested, those involved in axing the trees got into a verbal quarrel claiming that they had obtained prior permission from authorities.

It is reported that the tree cutters even submitted a permit letter from the Revenue Department that allowed them to axe the trees. However, Syed objected and said that trees do not need to be cut for the project to continue and that just pruning was more than enough, if required. “This is the case with every tree-cutting scenario that we face. The mistake often lies with officials who make no field visits before granting permission,” said Syed.

Unable to confront the activists and public, the project was carried out without axing the nine trees.
