Coimbatore: The city police arrested 315 CITU members for staging a protest to fulfill the demands of EB contract workers.
Coimbatore: The city police arrested 315 CITU members for staging a protest to fulfill the demands of EB contract workers.
CITU members are staging a statewide picketing protest and demanding that various demands of the EB contract workers be fulfilled. As part of the protest, about 300 members participated in the protest held at the Regional Engineer Office in Coimbatore. The protest led by the Regional Secretary Madhusudhanan demanded that a daily wage of Rs.380 as announced by the Government has to be granted and that the designation be changed from Gangmen to Field Assistants and to increase their number from 5000 to 10,000.
The protest was held to appeal for various other demands such as fulfilling the promises made by the Electricity Minister during the Thane, Vardha and Gaja Cyclones to fill up the 40,000 vacant positions, giving priority to contract workers based on age limit.
Even as the protesters raised various slogans against the State government, the police arrested 315 of them, including 22 women for protesting in spite of a ban on protests.
