In the past two months, wild elephant sightings have increased on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road and also in Ooty, Kolokambai, Thathurmattam and Thummanatty in the Nilgiris district. This caused labourers from going to tea estates fearing elephant attacks.

The forest officials had to light fireworks to prevent wild elephants from straying into residential areas.
