Coimbatore: The fire and rescue personnel are presently in the process of rescuing the 51 people including children who got struck in the other side of the bhavani river bank, on Tuesday.

According to reports, a total of 51 people from two families including children from Gounder Mills area and Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore went to Badrakaali Amman temple in Mettupalayam on Tuesday to spend their holiday. The family who decided to have lunch on the other side of the river bhavani walked through the river which had scanty water, at that time.

After having lunch, while they decided to cross the river, the gradual rise in water shocked them. As water from the dam was opened, water began gushing into the river which left them stranded in the banks.

Struck in fear, the family immediately alerted the fire and rescue department who rushed to the spot and commenced the rescue operation.

Presently, the people who are struck are being safely transported to the other side of the bank using coracles. According to sources from the spot, while a major batch of people have been rescued safely, the fire personnel are in the process of rescuing the others. As it has got dark, the rescue process is carried with additional care.

Tense moments prevailed at the Mettupalayam Bhavani river area, after 51 people got struck in the river. The locals opined that if the people who were struck would have made any attempt to walk through the river before waters began gushing, they would have got washed away. Their thoughtful decision of calling the fire and rescue department has saved their lives, they said.
