Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State Government would be awarding the officials and field staff of three divisions including Coimbatore, Tirupur and Pollachi who were involved in successfully translocating the wild elephant Chinnathambi from Kannadiputhur in Udumalpet to Varagaliyaru elephant camp, in February this year.

The award, which was initially recommended by the Chief Wildlife Warden, would be offered to all the officials involved in the operation by the end of the Wildlife Week celebrations at an event to be held at Guindy National Park in Chennai on Tuesday.
The team was following the elephant for more than 10 days as it walked from Ulandhi Range in Anamalai Tiger Reserve, all the way upto Kannadiputhur near Madathukulam in Udumalpet in February this year.
The animal was tranquilised and was transported to Varagaliyaru, where he is presently being trained as a camp elephant. Chinnathambi who won the hearts of many is said to be in a good condition.
It maybe noted that Chinnathambi was initially captured from Thadagam reserve forests in January 2019 and was translocated to Varagaliyaru. However, he had to be captured again and taken into captivity following lack of change in his behaviour towards raiding agricultural crops.
