The Nilgiris: Motorists and the pedestrians at Gandhipettai road in Ooty had to wait more than an hour on Monday morning, as a large herd of gaurs (Indian Bison) with calves were seen strolling on the road.

A herd of 20 gaurs with calves had ventured into Gandhipettai road from the nearby forest area, this morning. As the herd had calves, the adult gaurs were seen ferocious and restless.

The motorists stopped their vehicles and waited for more than an hour for the herd to clear the road. After a long wait, the herd at last left into the nearby forest area, thus resulting in severe traffic congestion in the area.

Over and again, the residents of Ooty and Coonoor have expressed concern over frequent straying of gaur herds in human habitations.

The public and motorists have requested the forest officials to keep a check on animal.mivement and chase the gaur herd into deep forests.

It may be recalled that over the last three years, six people were killed and  several injured in gaur attacks in the Nilgiris.
