Ecotourism at Baralikadu has been gaining popularity in the past 10 years due to the concerted efforts of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and the tribals in Baralikadu which is a dense forest region in the Mettupalayam district of Coimbatore. Situated in the picturesque hill station where the Pillur Dam is located, this scenic tourist spot is visited by many tourists from across Tamil Nadu, as well as from the neighbouring state of Kerala. Activities in Baralikadu are conducted on Saturday and Sunday in the water catchment area of the Pillur Dam which includes river rafting, coracle rides, trekking and delicious food cooked by tribals.
As a result of the heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats over the past two months, the flow of water to Pillur Dam had continued to increase. The Pillur Dam reached full capacity three times in the last month and surplus water from the dam was released. Due to the excessive stagnant water, Baralikadu Ecotourism area had been submerged. Coracle rides were stopped due to high water levels. But with the decrease in water flow , eco-tourism was resumed from today.
Tourists who had already booked and made reservations delighted in the long awaited ecotour amidst the lush green cover, as a result of the monsoon.
