While, the final date of eviction was ear-marked today, October 4, CCMC has yet again postponed the date to next week, as the residents are in the process of vacating and relocating to the houses allotted to them by the Slum Clearance board.
Following a high court order on a writ petition filed by KK Nagar residents association, CCMC decided to evict the residents of Jeeva nagar with immediate effect.
Out of the 230 odd houses at Jeeva Nagar, residents of 120 people had vacated and re-located to the housing units built by Slum Clearance board in Keeranatham. However, few others sought more time to vacate and even some challenged the CCMC to stay put and demanded patta for their land.
This continued battle forced CCMC to request TNEB to cut the EB lines, a few months ago. Even earlier this week, CCMC's eviction drive was postponed since residents sought more time. Unfortunately, on the same day two people died due to electrocution, while trying to vacate the houses.
According to Corporation officials, as of today morning, all of the remaining residents had vacated the houses completely and CCMC is planning to demolish the houses, the coming week.
Earlier today, few residents of Jeeva nagar submitted a petition to the Corporation Commissioner seeking allotments in the housing unit tenements at Kaapi Kadai in Saravanampatty. The Commissioner promised to consider their petitions.
