Coimbatore: While the illegal soil mining in Thadagam is taking ugly turns with activists being attacked, another mining activity has been spotted by an activist near the foothills of Maruthamalai around evening, today.

According to K. Syed from Osai, he had spotted a truck full of red soil, standing near the bushes in Thamburayanthurai, near Chinnamalai Adivaram.

When enquired, the driver of the truck belonging to ABW bricks from Kaalappampalayam, had given fishy answers. And, the truck belongs to Ananya Shelters Pvt Ltd.

“I immediately asked them for the papers and found out that they have a permit to excavate red soil from Veerapandi and Chinnathadagam, and the validity ended around April. But this is far away from the area mentioned in the paper,” he said.

Syed had immediately informed the local revenue officials, however claimed that no one turned up. He was offered support by the forest department who sent field staff.

“They had excavated soil from a land very close to the forest. It would turn very dangerous for wild animals and increase negative interactions between man and animals,” he said.

Meanwhile, after taking the issue to social media, Syed was approached by a few activists who requested him not to make the issue public.

“We are here to fight against the destruction of natural resources at all costs. How can we call ourselves activists, if we favour those who loot nature,” he questioned.

When Simplicity approached the North Tahsildar Radhakrishnan with the issue, he said that an enquiry was being carried out by revenue officials.

“The land from where the soil is excavated is a patta land. We are in the process of verifying the papers and if any perpetration is found, immediate actions would be taken,” he informed.
