Similar to thousands of people flocking the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore from various states and foreign countries, motorists too visit the Adiyogi idol over weekends. Last Saturday, six youth from Kerala were on their way to the Isha Yoga Center wearing helmets and with proper documents. Maran, Sub Inspector of Police who was on duty to inspect the vehicles near the Karunya police station checked the documents of the youth and enquired more details. He then reportedly demanded Rs. 600 (Rs.100 per person) to allow them to head toward their destination.
The youngsters questioned back about the reason for having to pay the money since they had proper documents and had worn helmets too. The Sub Inspector Maran reportedly demanded that they Rs.100 each and leave the spot. The youth paid Rs.100 to Maran even as one of them secretly recorded the video of Maran accepting money from the youth. The video footage was then uploaded on social media and went viral.
"We often go on a ride during the holidays. Whenever we travel to other states, we make sure to carry the original documents with us. Likewise, when we were heading toward Isha Yoga Center, all seven of us had helmet on. We were on five bikes which had proper documents. Even then, the police official demanded Rs.100 from each of us stating various lame reasons and allowed us to proceed only after we parted with Rs.100. This saddened us and hence we uploaded the video that we had recorded on to social media, " opined John, one of the motorists.
When a police official was asked to comment on the incident, he rubbished the accusation against Sub Inspector Maran stating that the pillion riders on the two-wheelers did not wear a helmet and hence they had been imposed a fine of Rs.100 with a receipt for the same given to the youth. "The video is being portrayed in a wrong way and has been taken with the help of the camera that is fixed on the helmet," stated the police official.
