Coimbatore : The Salem Railway Division in association with Nest, a Coimbatore-based NGO has planned to create responsible ‘Green Passengers’ by raising exclusive nurseries in its lands and public parks.
Coimbatore : The Salem Railway Division in association with Nest, a Coimbatore-based NGO has planned to create responsible ‘Green Passengers’ by raising exclusive nurseries in its lands and public parks.
The project which was launched on Wednesday by Assistant Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) A Anna Durai at Podanur Junction, was done as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission by the South Indian Railways. A 507 sq. mts nursery was inaugurated by ADRM on the same day.
Inaugurating the nursery, Annadurai said that the project was initiated considering the drastic climate change and the impact of global warming. “A team comprising the Railway Department’s higher officials of Salem Division led by DRM Subba Rao recently planned to start a green nursery where thousands of native breed tree saplings could be continuously raised and planted in railway lands including railway employees’ quarters, railway school premises, office premises, public parks, reserve sites, tanks and river banks, and even in private lands if needed,” stated Annadurai.
The responsibility of raising the saplings, maintenance of the nursery as well as planting the saplings in large numbers wherever necessary, including watering them for a period of a minimum six months to one year will be taken care of by the NGO ‘Nest.’
According to A Subha, the Green Wing President of the organisation, setting up a model herbal garden and butterfly garden near the Podanur railway junction has been suggested. “We have also planned to offer the saplings to passengers free of cost to increase green cover,” said another official from the Salem Railway Division.
Thirumal, Senior Divisional Engineer (West), Ravi Kumar Assistant Divisional Engineer, David SSE-works, Station Master Jaya Kumar, Commercial Inspector Elangovan, President of NGO ‘Nest’ Ananth, Operations Head Sandeep Kumar Jain and the Green Wing President Subha were present during the event. They also took a pledge to keep railway premises clean and green.
