Coimbatore : Gandhi Adigal Tamil Panpaadu Maiam presented the Ma.Po.Si award to Indian Communist Senior Leader, R. Nallakannu at an event held at the Gandhiadigal Educational institution at Edayarpalayam here Wednesday.
On the occassion of the 150st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the 93-year-old Communist leader was conferred with the prestigious awards which was formed in the name of Tamil scholar and founder of Tamizharasu Kazhagam Ma.Po. Sivagnanam (1906-1995), popularly known as Ma.Po.Si.
Gandhi Gramiya University, Ex Vice-Chancellor Markandan, Poet Puviyarasu and others were present.
R. Nallakannu is respected as one of the last surviving leaders who founded the Communist movement in India. It may be recalled that in 1999, Nallakannu stood for Coimbatore constituency on loksabha elections. Even though he secured 43.21 percent of total votes, he was defeated by CP Radhakrishnan.
