Coimbatore: Yet again, high drama prevailed on Tuesday morning at Jeeva Nagar after Corporation Officials decided to carry out an eviction drive on the remaining 100 houses built on encroached land.
Coimbatore: Yet again, high drama prevailed on Tuesday morning at Jeeva Nagar after Corporation Officials decided to carry out an eviction drive on the remaining 100 houses built on encroached land.
This is not the first time the CCMC officials had to reschedule the eviction date and extend the deadline. Following requests from the residents and Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan who stands in favour of the residents, the CCMC officials offered to extend the deadline till Friday.
Jeeva Nagar at Kavundampalyam had a total of 247 houses of which 145 have already been vacated and the residents were sent to housing units built by the TN Slum Clearance board at Keeranatham.
As the residents were reluctant to vacate the houses, CCMC had requested the electricity board to disconnect the EB lines at Jeeva nagar, few months ago.
In June 2018, an eviction drive was postponed due to repeated pleas from the residents and the MP who requested for additional time for vacating the houses.
The eviction drive to be carried out today was also canceled due to similar pleas.
Following a discussion with the MP and the residents, the Corporation officials have finally granted them deadline till Friday, October 4, 2019.
According to a senior Corporation official, "CCMC has to follow the high court orders of evicting residents from encroached lands. However, due to repeated requests from the residents, the eviction drive was postponed several times."
"Today's eviction drive was also canceled after the residents along with MP P.R. Natarajan requested CCMC for more time. The officials obliged and have given them time till Friday", he added.
