Coimbatore: The DMK staged a protest demanding for basic amenities including proper drinking water and roads to be provided in Mettupalayam.
Even though the River Bhavani is fondly known as 'Vatradha Jeevanathi' and flows through Mettupalayam, the residents of Mettupalayam are struggling for drinking water. In many areas belonging to the Municipality, drinking water is supplied only once in 15 days. Similarly, due to the underground drainage scheme work, roads of 33 wards have been dug up in the middle and not paved properly causing accidents.

The protest was held today by the DMK and its allies to condemn the Municipal administration's dysfunction at not taking any steps even after repeated appeals. Over 200 members of the DMK and its allied parties like Congress, Viduthalai Siruthaigal and Communist party took part in the protest led by the DMK District Secretary C R Ramachandran, in front of the bus stand. The protesters chanted slogans claiming that the dysfunction of the Municipal administration is the reason for people facing much trouble, like lack of even drinking water supply.
Besides providing drinking water to the public, the protesters urged for the administration to speed up the repair of damaged roads and to remove debris from the city. They warned that if the Municipality did not take appropriate action, they would have to resort to rounding up donkeys to protest at the Municipality.
