Chennai : The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edapaddi K Palaniswami requested the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi to direct the Civil Aviation Ministry to introduce direct flight services from Coimbatore to UAE.
Justifying his request, the CM mentioned that many passengers from Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur districts of Tamil Nadu travel regularly to Dubai and have long been urging for flight services from Coimbatore to Dubai.
The CM also requested for flight services between Salem and Chennai under the UDAN scheme. Though morning flights are operational in this sector, there is a growing demand for evening flights.
The TN CM's memorandum carried various other requests such as:
i) Requesting to expedite the linking of Peninsular Rivers, i.e. the Godavari and Cauvery Linkage as it is the only solution for Tamil Nadu's water woes. Water can be transferred from the Godavari to Cauvery, and then the quantity where Mahanadhi is linked with the Godavari can be increased.
ii) Rejuvenation of Cauvery and its tributaries on the lines of Namami Gange. Request financial support for “Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery” programme to restore the sacred River Cauvery and its main tributaries.
iii) A financial request under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana - Modernisation of Grand Anaicut Canal System of Tamil Nadu.
iv) Request to Sanction Revised project cost of Phase I and DPR of Phase–II under 50:50 joint venture partnership basis.
v) Request to establish New Government Medical Colleges at Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Namakkal, The Nilgiris and Tirupur under Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
vi) Release on pending Grants-in-aid from Government of India for major schemes as on 30.9.2019.
