Coimbatore : The Arulagam organisation have called out to people to aid injured vultures during the bird rescue week observed between September 30 to October 6.
In a statement, the organisation has given a series of instruction to the public, if they spot an injured vulture.
“Injured birds or birds that have fallen from sky or nest would try to fly initially. However, such injured birds would be on ground in a helpless condition and cannot make any move forward. They need to be rescued and safeguarded from dogs and not disturbed,” said a note from the organisation.
If they encounter a injured Vulture, the public are advised to immediately inform the concerned officials or NGOs to handle the bird, if needed. In such scenarios, own should hold the bird carefully using gloves and cloth to cover away from the claws and beaks of the birds.
They further advised people to provide water (not forcibly) and feed the bird with pieces of pork or mutton dipped in water. “Beef should be avoided, as cows are injected with vaccines that could be harmful to the birds,” the statement read.
The injured bird then should be immediately taken to a veterinary hospital, if found with injuries on the wings and should not be administered with any other pain killers but meloxicam.
“If the bird had recovered from the fall and is ready to fly, it should not be thrown into the air or kept on a branch. The birds should be left on the ground and allowed to move freely,” informed the organisation adding that the bird should be let to fly around early noon.
The organisation has also requested people to inform them or the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) in such circumstances.
