The herd which is said to be camped in a tea estate in Varatuparai in Valparai has rampaged the house on Saturday night. After fighting for over an hour, the residents chased the elephants using fire torches and beating drums.
The elephant herd which was chased from Varatuparai estate later entered into a panchayat union primary school nearby and rampaged the window panels and walls. The herd pulled sacks of rice, pulses, sugar and oil stored in the noon meal centre and consumed them.
By 6 am of Sunday, the elephants left the school.l campus after causing severe huge damage to the school.
More than 300 tea estate workers who reside in Varatuparai estate complain of living in fear, as the elephants are constantly engaged in causing damage to properties during the wee hours of the night.
