Coimbatore: With a female elephant aged around four being electrocuted by a solar fence near Kalkuthi Pathi, here on Saturday, the District Forest Officer (DFO) has said that it was an accidental death.
Coimbatore: With a female elephant aged around four being electrocuted by a solar fence near Kalkuthi Pathi, here on Saturday, the District Forest Officer (DFO) has said that it was an accidental death.
Briefing media persons after visiting the spot, DFO Venkatesh said that it was one of the very few unfortunate cases, despite all rules being followed.
“The owner of the farm had installed a solar fence powered by a 12 volt energiser and based on our inspection along with the electricity officials, there seems to be no violation,” he confirmed.
He further added that the animal that entered the village from the Madukkarai Range forest had accidentally been caught on the fence and was reportedly unable to escape until dying.
“The animal was too young to understand how to get rid of it. Usually solar fences repel the victim when touched, unfortunately this had elephant been repeatedly hit by continuous tripping of electricity and had died,” informed Venkatesh.
He further added that an autopsy would be conducted on the carcass.
Meanwhile, the herd with which the callf had come was roaming nearby troubling the investigation. They were repeatedly chased by the foresters.
