Coimbatore: Hundreds of devotees gathered at the footsteps of Perur Padithurai here on Saturday to perform rituals to their ancestors on the occasion of Mahalaya Amavasai.
As it is believed that ancestors leave their abode and come down to the world of mortals and occupy the houses of their descendants on the occasion of Mahalaya Amavasai, many Hindus offer oblation of water to the departed at the banks of water bodies and at their homes.
As charity is an important part of this occasion, people who perform rituals provide food and clothes to the needy. Littering happens during these rituals when the waste is not disposed off responsibly. Many volunteers of Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu had volunteered to clear the left overs after the rituals which could clog the water body and cause environmental degradation.
Volunteers from Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu along with engineering students of Government college of technology created awareness among the public to be responsible and not dump wastes in the Noyyal River.
The volunteers stayed vigil to collect all the plastic and waste from the public in separate bags for disposal and also kept announcing on speakers asking public not to litter in the river.
The commendable service by the volunteers were much appreciated by the public and passersby, as their efforts reminded that while we remember our ancestors on this special day, we also need to safeguard our environment for the future generations.
