Jayalakshmi lives with her mother, Madhavi and her uncle's son Aravindan in Ponvayal, a village in Padanthurai near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district. Two weeks ago, a lone elephant demolished one side of their house at night. Madhavi who has been in the room luckily survived the bizarre attack. Thereon, Madhavi and her daughter Jayalakshmi stayed at their relative's house at night fearing another elephant attack.
Meanwhile yesterday, the same elephant reportedly demolished the same house again and the belongings inside the home. Aravindan who lived inside the house miraculously escaped without any injuries.
Jayalakshmi's family are daily wage labourers who are left without a house now owing to the elephant attacks. Residents of the village have demanded that the Forest Department ought to take appropriate action to chase away the lone wild elephant immediately, since it has been in the area for over a month.
