Coimbatore : At a time when the focus of most youth has started falling upon the global climate crisis which was put to focus by child activists like Sweden Greta Thunberg, students of the Department of Zoology of Bharathiar University, rallied from Vadavalli, upto the Department building at the university campus on Thursday.
Coimbatore : At a time when the focus of most youth has started falling upon the global climate crisis which was put to focus by child activists like Sweden Greta Thunberg, students of the Department of Zoology of Bharathiar University, rallied from Vadavalli, upto the Department building at the university campus on Thursday.
The event marked the celebrations of World Environment Health Day, which is themed ‘Climate change challenges, time for global Environmental Health to act in unison’, declared by the International Federation of Environmental Health.
More than 150 students, scholars and staff participated in the awareness rally, which was jointly organised by the Nature Club of Bharathiar University, Department of Zoology, and the Rotaract Club of Western Valley. The rally was flagged off by the VC Committee members and K. Murugan, Registrar of Bharathiar University.
According to the organisers, the event was aimed at creating awareness on climate change, promoting the usage of sustainable and reusable products, avoiding plastics and thus creating a better and cleaner environment for the future generations.
The rally was followed by a guest lecture at the Seminar Hall in the Department of Zoology, Bharathiar University.
Speaking at the event, P.Pramod, Principal Scientist ag the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, emphasised on the link between human health and environment’s health and stressed on the importance of using the natural resources wisely.
Murugesan Somu, President of Rotary Club of Coimbatore town, Godwin Maria Viswasam, Zonal chair of Youth service wing of the RID 3201 and Prakash Kuttapan, Secretary of Rotary Club of Coimbatore town, M. Ramesh, Professor of the Department of Zoology of Bharathiar University and C. Gunasekaran, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology also participated in the event.
