Coimbatore: Following stern opposition from local people, officials of the Sirumugai Range on Thursday cut of spears that were fit in the farm walls to keep ranging wild animals away at Vachinamplayam in Vedar Colony in Mettupalayam here.

The issue came to light when local people complained that certain farm owners had put up spear heads on the walls to keep wild animals away from their farm. The walls, which were already girded with electric fences, were further fit with spear heads.

Local people claimed that it was injuring wild animals including elephants adding that activists who create a fuss of wild life treatment should immediately voice for it.

“When there is a small treatment for elephants the activists immediately burst into the scene and cry aloud in an attempt to voice for the elephant. Whereas, no one is saying anything when elephants are treated so brutally in our village,” said a local person from Vachinamplayam.

In certain areas, the walls on both the side of the road were fitted with spear heads restricting, creating more problem for ranging wild animals.

The issue was taken up by local people who also circulated the message in social media. Foresters were immediately called into the scene and they cut off all the spear heads using cutting machines, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a plea has been raised to take stern actions on the farm owners who deliberately devise plans to harm wildlife.
