Coimbatore: The incident involving the confiscation of 7 cell phones from prisoners in the 10th block of Coimbatore Central Prison in spite of tight security has caused a stir.
Coimbatore: The incident involving the confiscation of 7 cell phones from prisoners in the 10th block of Coimbatore Central Prison in spite of tight security has caused a stir.
There are a total of 134 prisons in Tamil Nadu of which 10 are Central Jails, 3 jails exclusively for women, 12 juvenile schools, 5 special branch jails, 9 district jails, 94 branch jails and 2 open jails. These prisons house thousands of prisoners and those under detention for various criminal activities, being a threat to national security as well as for Maoist activities.
Inmates of these prisons reportedly use drugs, smoke cigarettes, consume Hans, gutka, ganja and reportedly also possess Android cell phones. Information on the same had been passed on to the Government by the Prison Vigilance team and Intelligence officials, followed which an intensive search was conducted and all illegal goods seized.
In spite of authorities conducting sudden raids, illegal activities have not ceased in prisons. Banned items are being distributed frequently to prisoners due to the in-house accomplices of constables in the Coimbatore Central Jail. Following complaints that the second-grade constables were supplying illegal banned products like beedi, cigarettes, cannabis, cell phones and so on to the prisoners, the Prison Department has issued warning to the second-grade constables. Similarly, a notification was issued in writing to those involved in the illegal activities to abstain from wrongdoing. But despite the notification, the illegal activities did not seem to stop.
It has been reported that continuous use of cannabis by prisoners at the Coimbatore Central Prison is on the rise. Meanwhile, Constable Krishnamurthy was caught red-handed while smuggling cannabis to the prison by the prison administration and has been subsequently suspended. Apart from this, it was reported that the prisoners possess cell phones through which they stay in touch with the criminals outside the prison and instigate them to further crimes. The city police have been vigilant in carrying out sudden raids in prison to curb such activities.
Meanwhile, 7 cell phones were confiscated from the 10th block in the Central Jail on Wednesday, by the Prison Department. Following this, an investigation is being held on the source of supply for prisoners. The cell phone confiscation has again raised the question as to how inmates use Android phones when a jammer is in place inside the prison. The prison administration warned of stern action against prisoners and those who helped smuggle the cell phones into the prison.
According to police sources, the absence of Intelligence vigilance, such as the Prison Vigilance in the Central jail, Coimbatore, has led to such increase in crimes. It is therefore widely reported in police circles that the prison administration should get more vigilant to prevent such illegal activities in the jail by regular monitoring, through intelligence agencies.
