Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Airport employees affiliated to the Airports Authority Employees Union (AAEU) commenced a three- day hunger strike as a part of the nation-wide protest against the Centre's decision to privatize the airports belonging to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

As per Centre's decision, a company named Adani Group which has little or no connection to airlines is already working on privatizing the airports of Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Howrah, Mangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.
In this scenario, the Centre is taking steps to privatize ten other airports owned by AAI such as the ones in Amritsar, Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Indore, Kozhikode, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Tiruchirappalli and Varanasi.
The employees of the AAI have been engaged in three-day hunger strike from today, condemning the Centre’s attempt to dismantle the basic structure and pillars of the Indian economy, which are the Public Sector Undertakings (PSU).
The protesting employees wore black badges and raised slogans condemning the central government.
"If the Centre does not stop privatization move, the next step would be to protest in Delhi's Jantar Mantar on October 16” said Govindaraj, Coordinator of the Coimbatore Airport Authority Employees Union.
Moreover, the employees of AAI had already filed cases in the courts when steps were taken to privatize the Bombay and Delhi Airports.
The Supreme Court has ordered that no airport owned by the Airport Authority of India shall be privatized.
The protesters, however, stated that they are not against the privatization of the new airports that are going to be constructed but only oppose the privatization bid of the airports which belong to the AAI.
