Responding to the Court order, the District In-charge of the DMK and MLA Karthik stated that the party will abide by the High Court order and will not ask any shopkeeper to down shutters.
The opposition parties which come under the Secular Progressive Alliance banner and led by the DMK had called for a total bandh in Coimbatore on September 27, in protest against the revision in the property tax and the decision by the City Corporation to award the water distribution contract to a French company named Suez.
Addressing the media in light of the Court order, the DMK MLA N Karthik said, "The Coimbatore Corporation has imposed various taxes in the name of tax revision and increased taxes for water connections.
Apart from this, the property tax has been doubled and a 26-year agreement has been made with Suez Pvt. Ltd. Protesting against all these issues, the DMK and allied parties had announced a total bandh on September 27.
However, the Chennai High Court has banned the total bandh. Our party will not ask anyone to close their shop and we will abide by the Court's directive," he added.
However, Karthik stated that the issue will be discussed with the DMK Chief, M K Stalin and will be legally dealt with, as per his advice. "The party will not be responsible if people shut down their shops on their own. At the same time, the next course of action will be taken after consultations with coalition parties and lawyers, on the issue of the recent Court order."
