Coimbatore: In a first in the country, the Mettupalayam Forest College and Research Institute (FRCI) has devised a mechanism to create natural dyes from trees and flowers.
Using ingredients extracted from trees and its flowers, the institute is to promote natural dying of clothes and create natural dying units across the country. The method was introduced to personnel from textile units and dying units at the campus on Tuesday.
N. Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Commissioner of State Agri Marketing and Agri Business Department jointly inaugurated the Rs. 33 lakh work machine that creates natural dye.
Later in the day, the method of creating natural dye was explained to the visitors. The machine can create dye from 15 tree species including teak, eucalyptus, casuarine and pala indigo trees. The leaves, bark and flowers are important ingredients for dye making according to the officials.
The people incharge of the project also claimed that farmers would be encouraged to grow these trees to meet the demand of ingredients as the method does not involve artificial chemicals.
An exhibition of clothes dyed with natural dyes was also organised as a part of the event.
