Coimbatore : With another days to go for the massive protest planned by opposition parties against CCMC for hiking property tax and privatisation of drinking water, CCMC Commissioner J.Sravan Kumar addressed a press conference during which he informed the public not to believe rumours against 24x7 drinking water project.
J.Sravan Kumar alleged that unfounded information on 24x7 drinking water supply scheme to be implemented by SUEZ is being injected among people.
"Suez is assigned with the work of water distribution, laying of the drinking water pipelines and maintanence, fixing tariffs and other powers will remain only with the corporation. Hence, residents need not worry about the privatisation of drinking water supply", reitrated the Commissioner.
The Commissioner further clarified that Suez has no role in fixing consumption charges which would be as per the rates fixed by the corporation and it would be based on the actual consumption.
"The first four years of the contract is the implementation stage and the remaining 21 years is for operation and maintenance. The project would be implemented only at 60 wards (old wards)", he added.
"Like electricity, people should also judiciously use drinking water though it would be supplied round the clock," he pointed.
Deputy Commissioner, S. Prasanna Ramasamy and City Engineer A. Lakshmanan were present.
