Coimbatore: Last Sunday marked the formation of a new movement involving like-minded people to work for and regain water, for the dried up farmlands of Madukkarai and Chettipalayam.

The movement backed by the ongoing Chettipalayam Waterbody Management Organisation met on September 22, Sunday at Kuniyamuthur to discuss on the means and ways bring back water.

Three major resolutions were passed on the day and it was decided to take forward the ideas through concrete actions.

The long pending demand of the movement was to bring recycled water from the Ondipudhur Water Treatment plant and feed the parched lands of Chettipalayam. In order to move ahead with their demand, the members decided to test the treated water from the plant

“The water should be brought using pipes and natural water channels and then collected at the water bodies in Chettipalayam. We have planned to petition the District Collector K. Rajamani in this regard,” said a member.

They further added that if the scheme is brought to life, not just farmers, even general public would be benefitted by the ground water recharge.

“This movement involves more people and so we have decided to take the message to general through various awareness programmes,” they said.

The members also thanked the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) for their constant support.

“The land was once rich and was filled with flushing farmlands. But it has been converted into desolate wastelands because of the drought situation. The situation can change only, if the ground water is recharged,” claimed a member.

Farmers, Youth, NGO members and general public participated in the meeting.
