In the first case, Visalakshi (66) from Anna Nagar, Lower Kothagiri, near Kothagiri, who was working as a temporary sanitary worker in Thenad panchayat was murdered by Moorthy her nephew.
Visalakshi and her nephew Moorthy (45) lived together as Moorthy's first wife had died and his second wife had separated from him.
Moorthy a habitual drunk picked up a quarrel and attacked Visalakshmi so hard that she collapsed and died on the spot.
To cover the murder, Moorthy set her on fire. Since the neighbours saw fumes coming out of the house, they promptly informed the police. Police reached the spot and arrested Moorthy for investigation.
In another such tragic incident, an elderly man Pandian (80), a meat trader in Lower Kothagiri was murdered by his son Chinnapandi (40).
Chinnapandi is an alcoholic. He was unemployed and an idler. Due to his drinking habit, his wife separated from him and his mother has gone away to live in her daughter's house.
Chinnapandi who came home drunk yesterday night picked up a quarrel with his father and attacked him in which his father died on the spot.
The neighbours who witnessed the incident immediately informed the police. The police reached and retrieved the body and sent to the Kothagiri Government hospital for postmortem. The police arrested Chinnapandi and investigations are on.
Two murders on the same night and that too in the same area has deeply shocked psyche of the people of Kothagiri.
