In the petition submitted to the collector, he has stated that "the Government of Tamil Nadu has banned single-use plastic bags and many awareness programs were held for the same. The officials have been vested with enough powers to restrain, and levy fine whenever violations happen. However, the eradication plastic usage among the public has not been brought to end due to various factors”
Also, manufacturers continue to use plastic bags to package snacks, shampoos, water bottles, packs, limes and all sorts of decorative items, despite the plastic ban in place.
Resultantly, the water resources such as a lake, ponds, drainage are dumped with plastic effluents, water bottles by the callous use and dumping of plastic by the general public.
The Municipal, Corporation and other departments in charge of cleaning up the plastic debris from the water resources collect them and burn them in some other places thus causing wastage of money as the Government has spent several lakhs of rupees over this.
The petitioner bemoaned the fact that “soil and air pollution can severely damage the environment and the longevity of cattle. Ingestion of disposed plastics would lead to stomach ailments, cancer and even death in animals and humans”.
“As in the case of Karnataka Government, which succeeded in total eradication of plastic usage, the Tamilnadu Government should monitor the usage of plastics strictly and try to eradicate the menace in a phased manner to save the environment and farmers” the petitioner noted in his petition.
