The Forest department has arrived at the decision to reopen the eco-tourism centre in Baralikadu in the upcoming week as the inflow has been considerably reduced in the Pillur dam to 1000 cusecs.
Baralikadu is a surrounded by dense forest near Mettupalayam, where an eco-tourism project is being run by Tamil Nadu Forest Department in coordination with the local tribal communities.
Situated in the picturesque location of the Pillur dam, this scenic tourist spot is visited by a large number of tourists from different parts of Tamil Nadu as well as from the neighbouring states.
Tourists, who wish to spend a day out in natural surroundings, book this eco-tour online which is run by the Forest Department.
During the weekends the tourists can experience boating, aquaculture, tropical forest trekking and tropical jungle trekking with the help of trained tribal people in the reservoir of Pillur dam, which is located in the middle of pristine natural surroundings.
In the meantime, due to heavy rains which lashed the Western Ghats over the past one month, the flow in the Pillur dam has been continuously on the rise and flooding of nearby areas was reported.
Not only the Pillur brimmed up thrice in the past month, the eco-tourism spots in Baralikadu area has also been heavily flooded.
As the facility remained closed for the past one month the livelihood of tribals has been affected. Over 50 tribals of both sexes were employed in various activities including boating and food preparation in the eco-tourism facility.
Meanwhile, in the past week, rain and the water inflow in the Pillur dam has considerably receded to 1000 cusecs and the storage level is 88 feet now.
Therefore the Forest Department has announced that the Baralikadu Eco-Tourism will reopen as usual from the next week.
“Similarly, the Forest Department's lodge in the Poochimarattur area will also operate as usual” Forest officials said.
