Coimbatore: While an active campaign is on to save the dying Koushika River in Coimbatore, insensible activity by the Narasimmanaickenpalayam panchayat officials have led to the conversion of a strip of the river into a dumpyard.
Starting from construction debris to domestic waste collected from the surrounding villages, officials are dumping them on a part of the village and also burning them.
“This has been going on for many years near the Pudhupalayam Road. After a serious of complaints, police officials directed people to not dump here. However, this still continues, said D. Nandhagopal, a farmer from the area.
He further added that despite an order from the Coimbatore District Collector banning the burning of waste, panchayat officials are not complying to it.
“They are burning plastic wastes blatantly without considering the health implications it could have on us. In addition to this, poultry waste and other industrial wastes are also dumped,” he claimed.
Another resident claimed due to the harmful gases let emanating from the burning of wastes, cattle are directly affected resulting in untimely death.
District administration officials were not available for comment.
