Coimbatore: A man who was frequently involved in illegal tusk trading was arrested by the Forest Department at Mettupalayam.
Coimbatore: A man who was frequently involved in illegal tusk trading was arrested by the Forest Department at Mettupalayam.
Despite a ban on ivory trade, elephants are being poached for tusks. Since 2011, a gang has been involved in poaching wild elephants and smuggling ivory in the forest areas including Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Theni and Gudalur and Kerala.
Subsequently, upon the orders of senior officials of the Forest Department, special attention was given to the case and the forest officials took Singam (45) from Varusanadu in Theni and Gubendran (42) into custody and investigated them.
During investigation, it was found that Babu alias Chettiar (40) from Idukki in Kerala supplied ivory to them by hunting down elephants. The Forest officials were searching for Babu for over four years now.
In this case, the Mettupalayam Forest Department arrested Babu when he left the Mettupalayam Criminal Court after appearing before the court for a case filed on him earlier. In the investigation, it was revealed that more than 10 elephants were hunted all over Tamil Nadu and 4 were hunted down in Mettupalayam and Sirumugai.
Mettupalayam Forest Department registered a case under 7 Sections and remanded him in the Mettupalayam Court. He was later imprisoned in Coimbatore Central Prison.
