In a bid to end plastic menace, the District administration has banned the sale of water bottles and soft drinks with effect from September 1.
To meet the drinking water needs of tourists, the district administration has installed Water ATMs in the Botanical Gardens, Rose Garden, Boat House, Coonoor Sims Park, Kattery Park, Pykara and the most crowded places in the district and expected the public to use it to get drinking water.
The drinking water is priced at 200 ml for Rs.1, 400 ml for Rs. 2 and 1 liter for Rs.5.
“But tourists and the general public has yet to get acclimatized to using the Water ATMs, so there is a need to address the problem by putting up banners bearing information about its functioning” say the locals.
In the meanwhile, allegations have surfaced that the operators of private bars attached to TASMAC liquor outlets have been abusing the water ATMs to store and sell this water for a higher price.
“ The district collector should step in and monitor the usage of the water ATMs to avoid any abuse by the vested interests” the locals said.
