Coimbatore: Officials from Town planning department from CCMC demolished about 18 houses in Al ameen colony which is said to be encroaching the Rajavaaikkal. The residents of the houses have already moved out to the housing unit allotted to them in Vellalore.

According to sources from Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance board, all these houses were given eviction two years ago and most of them had moved out. However, the remaining residents were given time due to delay in allotting housing units.

"With Ukkadam flyover works happening, the encroachments were causing huge traffic congestion in the locality. We have been voicing our concern for a long time. The Corporation along with the Police department and slum clearance board have finally cleared the encroachments which will now shorten the distance the residents have to take to reach main road," said Abdul Hakkim of Jamat-e - Islami.
"Now that the encroachments are removed, this will help in alleviating traffic congestion caused due to traffic diversion because of the ongoing Ukkadam fly over works," added Hakkim.
