The Nilgiris : Tense moments prevailed at the market area in Ooty on Friday, as the shopkeepers got into a heated argument with the officials from District Administration and Municipality for demolishing their shops that were built on encroached lands.

The irked shopkeepers argued with the officials and sought more time to vacate, however citing that required notice period has been served, the officials proceeded with demolishing the shops using JCBs.
However, a few shops were spared, after the owners produced land documents and sought more time to vacate.

Recently, the district administration has been on a spree to remove encroached shops on sidewalks and roadside areas in Ooty and surrounding towns.
It may be recalled that two days back, the Highways department cleared more than 8 shops near the central bus station, citing encroachment. And, around 20 shops were cleared by the municipality officials today, out of which 15 were from the busy market area.
Traffic congestion was reported for a brief time in the busy market area, as JCBs were deployed to clear the encroached shops.
