Coimbatore : In a bid to create awareness among rail passengers to maintain cleanliness at railway junctions, more than 150 private college students volunteered for an awareness program held at the Coimbatore Railway Station here on Thursday.
Coimbatore : In a bid to create awareness among rail passengers to maintain cleanliness at railway junctions, more than 150 private college students volunteered for an awareness program held at the Coimbatore Railway Station here on Thursday.
The event was jointly organized by the Salem Zonal Railway of the Southern Railways and Aram Foundation and Charitable Trust.
Though the Central Government continues to take various steps to keep railway stations clean, the effort needs to be supported by the cooperation of passengers. But many passengers use train compartments akin to bins and throw waste, wherever they please.
The Railway Department and the Central Government, thus decided to carry out awareness campaigns throughout the nation in September and October of every year, under the Swachh Bharat Scheme to create awareness among passengers to refrain from littering in public places.
As part of the campaign, the students held placards and created awareness through skit and dance that emphasized on dumping wastes in garbage bins and not littering in public places.
Thereafter, student volunteers cleared the waste including plastics from the railway platforms, railway tracks seating area and other nearby areas.
Coimbatore Railway Station Manager, Raju, Coordinator of Aram Foundation and Charitable Trust, Latha Sundaram were present.
