Coimbatore : Over 10,000 lorry drivers are taking part in the All India Motor Transport Congress' (AIMTC) nationwide strike, condemning the excessive increase in fine for violating rules according to The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
The Central Government has implemented the New Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill with effect from September 1. The Act imposes an excessive fine if lorry drivers are found violating the rules. Condemning this Amendment Bill, AIMTC India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) had called for a nationwide strike today, urging the Central Government to repeal the excessive fines imposed.
The Tamil Nadu State Lorry Owners Association had announced their support of the strike, with over 10,000 lorry owners in Coimbatore refusing to operate the vehicles. Lorry drivers said that they are being imposed with a fine of Rs. 2,000 for not wearing uniforms and the trucks are being suspended until the fine amount is paid. Goods to be transported to Kerala and other states have been stagnant due to the non-operation of the lorries that generally carry cargo.
The lorry owners said that today's strile is from 6 am to 6 pm. It is to be noted that the Goods Lorry Association and a few other Lorry Owners Associations have not participated in the strike.
