Coimbatore : The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) through Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pongalur jointly organized an Environmental Awareness and Tree Planting Drive on September 17 at the TNAU Farm.

Sundharajan, Trustee, Vanam India Foundation (Vanaalayam), Palladam presided over the function and emphasized the importance of tree planting. He listed the achievements of Vanalayam for the past two years in Tiruppur district, adding that climate change makes greater impact on the earth. He insisted that farmers and rural youth ought to come forward to save the earth.
Devarajan, President, Kovai Tree Growers Association, Coimbatore explained the need of tree planting and eco-tourism by using different high value tree species. "This Association fought with many agencies to carry the high value tree species. Hence, farmers are advised to grow high value timber trees for their livelihood," he added.
155 farmers from the Pongalur block of Tiruppur district and 16 students from the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore and Kudimiyanmalaiare attended the drive. 775 tree saplings were distributed to the farmers with 36 tree saplings planted at Krishi Vigyan Kendra farm at Pongalur. The varieties of trees planted were Palmyrah, Red Sand, Rose Wood, Mahogany, Neem, Casurina and Pungam.
Dr. N Anandaraja, Programme Coordinator welcomed the gathering and narrated the purpose of the meeting. He highlighted that man cannot survive without the environment, especially without the tree species. He stressed that taking up tree plantations as a means of livelihood is remunerative without much risk, like field and horticultural crops.
Dr. R Dhanasekara Pandiyan deliberated on the importance of soil and soil health while Dr. K Maruthupandi also explained about the importance of trees for the livelihood of mankind. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. M Rajasekar.
