Coimbatore : City police arrested 34 farmers, who protested against the setting up of High Tension lines in farmlands by burning the copy of "The Indian Telegraph Act 1885" in front of the South Taluk Office.
Coimbatore : City police arrested 34 farmers, who protested against the setting up of High Tension lines in farmlands by burning the copy of "The Indian Telegraph Act 1885" in front of the South Taluk Office.
A series of protests are being held throughout the state against the Power Grid Corporation of India, for laying the transmission corridor installing the High Tension lines cutting through farmlands.
In the protests held here today, the protesters tore the copies Telegraphs act, when police tried to stop them. Following this, the police seized the copies from the agitating farmers.
Farmers Association members said that the Centre should not follow colonial laws, which are not applicable today.
Arguing that the power lines could be taken though underground cables as is practised in Kerala, the farmers demanded the immediate release of the arrested farmers who are imprisoned in Central jail.
