The Nilgiris : The Highways Department with the help of the Police Department removed all encroachments near the Ooty Central Bus Stand, this evening. Shopkeepers were seen having heated arguments with officials due to the impromptu action.
The encroachments in Nilgiris have been increasing by the day, with a large number of shops being set up on the sidewalks in the town which actually belong to the Highways Department. Various departments have continuously been involved in removing these encroachments from time to time.
In this case, as per the orders of the District Collector Innocent Divya, the Highways Department forcibly removed 10 shops near the Ooty Central Bus Stand, today. Though the shopkeepers argued saying they had proper documents for their shops, the officials turned a deaf ear to their pleas and removed all 10 shops in the area based on the fact that they were built on lands belonging to the Highways Department.
Over 30 policemen provided security until the shops were brought down using JCB.
