Murali (26), hailing from the Pillaiyarpuram area on the Madukkarai road in Coimbatore reportedly sexually assaulted a mentally challenged woman who lived in the same area. The mother of the abused woman who had suddenly returned home found Murali accosting her daughter and confronted him.
Following their argument, their neighbour Kannan tried to catch Murali but Murali escaped after striking Kannan's eye with a sharp weapon.
The public chased him down thereafter and informed the Pothanur police station. The police reached the spot and took Kannan to a private hospital, while Murali who had injured his leg in the fall was taken to Coimbatore Government Hospital.
The Pothanur police have registered a case. The Puliyakulam women police station is expected to investigating the case further.
