Presently the protesters are imprisoned at Coimbatore Central Jail where the leaders met them to lend their support for their cause.
R Shanmugam, Muthu Viswanathan, Parthasarathy, Thangamuthu were held while the survey for the lands for installation of HT lines was carried out in Kundadam, Tirupur.
Later, K. Balakrishnan, State Secretary of CPM spoke to journalists and found fault with the Government for taking up the works to lay HT lines in 30 alignments without taking the farmers, the stakeholders into confidence.
He said that the farmers who were arrested and put behind bars in the Central jail were taken for negotiation but was later arrested and this action is to be condemned.
Balakrishnan said that his party would extend support to the planned protest against high power, towers planned for September 18.
He also condemned the decision of the government to conduct public examinations for class 5 and 8 and assured to fight such anti-student measures.
K.Balakrishnan also said that CPM would give their full support and participate in the Total bandh call given on September 27 in Coimbatore which is organised by all the political organisations against House tax increase, and permission given to the Suez Company for water distribution and various other such civic issues afflicting the people of the city.
Appealing to political parties to honour the Supreme Court verdict regarding flex banners, he said political parties should discourage their cadres from erecting flex banners.
While lauding the environmental campaign in Tamil Nadu to protect Cauvery River, he said people who are fond of Jaggi Vasudev can support his initiative 'Cauvery calling' but why the state government should fund the effort?.
“Rs. 42 is charged per sapling in the venture. will the Government take responsibility if it failed? Will the Government support all such private ventures? The Government can do such programmed by involving Forest and Horticulture department” Balakrishnan opined.
K Balakrishnan also backed the opinion of Surya who recalled Periyar’s views on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by saying “Godse functioned just as a pistol”.
“One need not bother about the hue and cry raised by the right wing parties and outfits" he added.
