Coimbatore : A history-sheeter who had been arrested by the Alanthurai Police escaped from police custody in a dramatic fashion when he was receiving treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
The accused, Vijayaraj, was being administered first-aid at CMCH last night when he made good his escape after hoodwinking the police guarding him. According to the police, the Sri Lankan refugee camp which is located in Buluvampatti falls within the Alanthurai police station limits. The camp is notorious for its drug sale of Cannabis and many other illegal activities including sale of lottery tickets.
In a duel between Sivanesan who sells No:3 nu lottery and Vijayaraj (23) who has been involved in various criminal cases, Sivanesan was injured. He was admitted at CMCH and the Alanthurai police subsequently arrested Vijayaraj and took him for medical care to CMCH. Vijayaraj reportedly slipped away from the hospital premises when taken to the X-ray room by the hospital staff.
A special police team has been formed to nab Vijayaraj who escaped from police custody.Under the orders of the Superintendent of Police, Sujit Kumar, four special police teams have been formed to search for Vijayaraj. The CCTV footage from CMCH is also being closely monitored to find clues related to the escape.
