The Nilgiris: To realise the dream of 'Clean Nilgiris', the students of commerce department of Providence Ladies College in Coonoor organised an awareness programme based on the theme ‘Spit Free; Clean Nilgiris', on Sunday.
In a bid to annihilate the habit of spitting in public places in the district, Collector, J. Innocent Divya passed stern orders to slap a spot fine of Rs. 1000 fine for the menace of ‘spitting in public’.
In accordance with the same, the Coonoor Providence college students created an awareness campaign on ‘Spit Free, Clean Nilgiris' to educate the public on the ill effects of spitting in public places, especially on the serious health hazards it could pose to others.
As part of the awareness programme, the students also highlighted on the plight of chewing banned tobacco products like Gukta and spitting them in public places.
The students created awareness amongst the public in Sims Park, Bedford and bus stand.
