Madurai: In a rare incident, a woman who killed her husband in self-defence after he attacked her in an inebriated condition and tried to misbehave with their daughter was let out by the police without framing any criminal charges on her.

Usha Rani had marital discord with her husband Jothibasu since 1995. They were several cases against Jothibasu in many police station for harassing family members. The couple separated and Usha Rani had been living with her kids for a few months now.
A fortnight ago, Jothibasu returned home and assured the police in the Oomachikulam station that he would not harass his wife or children.
Even after his reassurance, on Thursday, he came home, assaulted his wife and attempted to misbehave with their daughter.
In Usha Rani's left with no choice, and to protect her daughter, hit her husband Jothibasu with a cricket bat. He collapsed immediately. Later Jothibasu was declared brought dead by the doctors in Government Rajaji Hospital.
Since the woman confessed to having committed the crime, she was detained for interrogation.
In her statement, she told that she had acted only in self-defence to protect her daughter from her husband who tried to physically abuse her.
Superintendent of Police Asra Garg has said that the accused was released based on the preliminary investigations, it was found out that the accused had committed the crime on grounds of private defence and hence she was released.
The SP explained that under IPC Section 100, “the right of private defence of the body extends to the voluntary causing of death or any other harm to the assailant if the offence that occasions the exercise of the right is an assault to commit rape.”
