DevFest 2019 was hosted by GDG Coimbatore chapter at the KCT tech park today.
Delivering the keynote address, Paul Ravindranath, Google India gave a 'shocking' statistics about the number of women entering the IT sector.
" Google conducted a study in Vishweshwara University, the results of which show that more than 50% of women enroll in computer science stream, but only 17% of them get into tech workforce, This is termed as " leaky pipeline problem" he said.
“Most of them drop out due to various reasons including socio-economic factors and end up in HR or Marketing jobs” .
“There is a wrong perception about IT jobs that they are extremely stressful and it involves very long work hours. It may be true in certain cases but most of them are assumptions. “Stated Paul.
“Even among the 17% women who are in tech jobs, only a small percentage of them invest in upskilling. This is due to various practical problems like they have to attend to domestic chores during the weekend which men can overlook” Paul said.
Google has been trying to improve this by conducting various programmes like Women in tech. Women should also come forward and try to participate in meet up programmes which will help them in upskilling and getting them more opportunities, “continued Paul.
Taking about the Developer student clubs Paul Ravindranath stressed on the need to have more such groups in universities.
“Google has signed up with over 600 universities all over the world wherein such groups will be created and mentor students to be entrepreneurs in the Technolgy space”.
Google has tied up with Ministry of Electronics and Information technology to launch a programme “Build for Digital India " wherein entrepreneurs can come up with ideas to solve community-related problems and they will be mentored by experts.
They can build their products with the help of this programme and can become tech entrepreneurs who can build world-class companies".
