Coimbatore : Nallasamy, Coordinator of Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement and Secretary of Federation of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, alleged that the reason behind the slowing down of the economy in the country could be attributed to neglect of the agrarian sector.

Addressing the media, he said “The contribution of the agriculture sector in the country's growth rate in 1947 stood at 65% where as it has come down to 15% in the present times”.
“Only 2.5 per cent of the budget is being allocated to Agriculture when around 60 % of the population depends on it” he noted
"India as an agriculture country relies on 70 % import of edible oil and 60 % of pulses. This, in turn, affects the country's foreign exchange reserves. If agriculture is given the priority on par with the industrial sector, the country would have been a developed one now” Nallasamy further said.
“India’s red carpet welcome to the banned industries in developed countries has affected the land, water and air" he said.
"Noyyal River has lost its charm due to the readymade garment industries in Tirupur. In the last eight days alone around 25 tmc Cauvery water has gone waste into the sea. If the waters have been evenly distributed on a day to day basis this wastage could have been prevented. “He added.
"Toddy tapping and consumption is a constitutional right. A massive protest in which Toddy would be tapped and sold would be launched from January 21, 2020, all over Tamil Nadu” Nallasamy noted.
“The pension given to the small and marginal farmers should be on par with public servants and teachers “Nallasamy demanded.
